First Aid
We have a number of staff in school, including Year Managers, who are trained in both First Aid at Work and Emergency First Aid at Work. It is important to note that all our first aid staff are not qualified medical practitioners. We expect visits to First Aid to be minimal and only for injury and illness that occurs during the school day or for the taking of prescribed medicines. If your child presents as too unwell to remain in school, we will contact you to make arrangements for you to take them home or seek appropriate medical attention. Students will be expected, to return to lessons after seeing the first aider and appropriate treatment has been administered.
Our first aiders are available between 9am and 2.30pm on a school day, providing emergency first aid and treatment.
First aid is intended to treat injury and illness that occurs during the school day and is not an alternative to seeing a GP, calling 111 or attending A&E. For any injuries occurring outside of the school day we encourage you to contact either your GP, NHS 111 or A&E to seek appropriate treatment.
We encourage self-care relating to minor illnesses prior to the school day and paracetamol doses will only be given with your consent, in school as a last resort prior to sending your child home.
If your child is routinely presenting at first aid for paracetamol or any other issue, we will contact you to discuss any medical issues the school need to be aware of. Please also be aware that we can only supply paracetamol in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and not for more than 3 days without a GP consultation.
Prescribed and non-prescribed medicines
We encourage any prescribed medications to be taken outside of the school day, but where this is not possible, please bring the prescribed medication into school. This must be in the original box with prescribers’ instructions accompanied by a completed parental agreement for prescribed medicines form.
Other medication is not permitted to be given unless it has been prescribed to your child.
If your child has been recommended an alternative non-prescription medication by a medical professional, then this would need to be written into their care plan to manage their medical condition and would need to be confirmed by the medical professional in question, alongside a completed parental agreement for non-prescribed medicines.
