Charities
Giving service to others and looking beyond the school community to our local, national and international communities is regarded an important part of the education offered at Harrogate Grammar School.
Each year the school supports a chosen Principal Charity and the Charities Committee made up of staff and students meet periodically to organise and support events throughout the academic year to raise money for them.
In the past the school has raised money for the Teenage Cancer Trust to equip a room for teenage patients at St. James’ Hospital in Leeds; BASIK – Build a School in Kenya; Harrogate Hospital and Community Friends, The Himalayan Trust UK, Martin House and Just ‘B’ – a Harrogate Bereavement charity which the school still maintains close links to.

During 2021-22, we raised over £5700 through termly non-uniform days and Bizarre Bazaar events for the Red Cross Appeal for Ukraine.
Please see the link below for details of how the Red Cross have been supporting Ukraine during the conflict which started in February 2022.
For 2022-23, the main Charity that we are supporting is SASH – Safe and Sound Homes. They are a vitally important charity based in York, who work to prevent youth homelessness in 16- to 25 year olds across York, North and East Yorkshire. Our Sixth Form team have had experience in using their services in recent years which helped to support our students.
In addition to SASH, we also have long-standing relationships with local and national charities that are special to us such as Papyrus, Macmillan Cancer Research, Breast Cancer Awareness and the Readathon through other calendared events. In addition. we have a close link to Give a Child a Hope (GACAH) which supports the development of The Revival Centre in Matugga, Uganda. Money raised by Harrogate Grammar School in the past has enabled the school to build a vocational centre, where students learn trade skills, giving them life-long opportunities.
This year we are looking to link to the school’s House system in order to co-ordinate more events and bring more of a competitive edge to our fundraising efforts so please keep an eye on the weekly bulletin for details of upcoming events.
Throughout the academic year 2022-2023 we are ambitiously aiming to raise £20,000 to support all the Charities identified. Your support of this aim as part of the school community would be appreciated. This may involve you:
- joining the Charities Committee (staff and students)
- donating, or bidding on, lots in the Charity auction (parents and the local community)
- fundraising at one of the bake sales (students gaining house points)
- sponsoring students and staff for different challenges throughout the year (everyone).
